Be Unstoppable!

Self-compassion is a new concept for me! It was introduced to me by one of my challengers, now one of my coaches...and it's such an amazing concept!

It has become socially acceptable, especially in the realm of graduate school, to be self-critical. To bash ourselves! We're taught, socially that that is okay. And that that is how we improve. But that's not the case. Being unkind to yourself is the same as being unkind to someone else.

I paraphrased this quote from the podcast, "Art of Charm."

If you talked to your friends the way you talk to yourself, then you would not have any friends.

Mull that over for just a second.

We say things to ourselves like, "I suck" or "I'm so stupid." Those comments come so easily and so naturally. And it's sad.

If you say those things to yourself, even in a self-deprecating fashion, it's unkind. And those things we say to ourselves grow into things that we feel and believe about ourselves.

We need to realize that. We need to stop treating ourselves like that.

In the attached article, Margarita Tartakovsky, MS discusses 5 Strategies for Self-Compassion! In it, she says "Self-compassion has been linked to greater well-being, including diminished anxiety and depression, better emotional coping skills and compassion for others."

Okay, so self-compassion is good for you. But, what does it mean to exercise self-compassion? What IS self-compassion even?

In this article, they discuss the 3 types of self-compassion according to Kristin Neff, a PhD in human development.

  • Self-kindness, meaning exercises kindness and understanding toward yourself when you're struggling or suffering.
  • Common humanity, meaning that you realize that you're not alone and that other people are experiencing similar struggles to you. Common humanity points to the fact that we should not feel isolated or alone in our struggles, because more likely than not others are experiencing the same things we are.
  • Mindfulness, meaning that we are able to observe life without being judgmental and that we are able to suppress our thoughts and feelings and merely experience life as it happens to us!
Contrary to popular belief, it is not narcissistic or self-indulgent for you to exercise compassion with yourself! On the conrary, it will only benefit you.

I highly suggest you check out this website, http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2012/06/27/5-strategies-for-self-compassion/, to learn more about self-compassion and some strategies that you can use to improve the way you relate to yourself.

But here is the jist!
  1. Treat yourself the way you would treat a friend! - The other day my friend said to me, "I'm a hot mess...minus the hot part." Would you ever say that to a friend of yours? NO! So don't say it to yourself!
  2. Watch your language - We so often say things like "you suck" or "you're stupid" or something along those lines! Watch your language! Be kind to yourself!
  3. Comfort yourself with a physical gesture! - read more about this with the associated link! But the idea is to find a gesture, either placing your hands on your arms or putting a hand over your heart, or something like that t demonstrate compassion in a physical way!
  4. Memorize something that makes you feel compassionate or powerful...or better yet develop your own power phrase! One quote I have started to tell myself often is "Compassion is the thief of joy!" I often compared myself to others, and repeating this phrase to myself helps me to overcome that.
  5. Meditate! So often our reason for not being compassionate stems from just being our own heads! It's amazing what 10 minutes of meditation or merely sitting in silence will do to shutting off the rampant thoughts that run through your head!
I challenge you to start exercising self-compassion!

I challenge you to find an area of your life that you're particularly bad in and work on getting better!

If we're not compassionate toward ourselves, how do we expect others to be compassionate to us? We need to change the way we think about ourselves or we'll never find true happiness and passion in our lives.

Until next time,

It's a (belated) #FoodieFriday post! Which means I gotta share something delicious and nutritious. So why not stay on the Shakeology train? Haha

A couple posts ago, I told you all about Shakeology and why I'm obsessed with it in "What is Shakeology? AND How is it different?". So, it only seems appropriate that I would do a Shakeology recipe share!

In that last post I told you all about the health benefits of shakeology and why it is beneficial to you from a health standpoint, and worth the cost you pay (which let's be real, is only the price of a latte! Prioritize!)

Today, I'm going to get into the fun part, and my favorite thing about Shakeology - the taste!

Shakeology comes in 4 different flavors - Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Greenberry! Though I definitely have my personal preferences, I've tried them all and they're ALL really tasty on their own with just some water/milk and ice!

But today, I want to share with you how we can get a little crazy with our Shakeology recipes, and have a whole lot of fun!

So let's go...flavor by flavor!

Probably my first Shakeology selfie for my challenge group! Enjoying the Supa Tropical!
Greenberry!

The absolute first Shakeology flavor I tried!! I don't know what inspired me. Maybe I just wanted to get a little crazy! Or probably because it was the flavor my coach was drinking when I signed up!

It's delicious! It tastes like a green tea frappucino in my opinion! Nom!

Greenberry definitely isn't for everyone, but I definitely have some AWESOME recipes that you should try!

Greenberry Coffee Kickstart
-1C of drip Coffee (at whatever strength you desire)-1/2 C of nut milk (I like Almond and coconut milk)-Handful of chopped spinach (You can use other greens if you wish, but I like spinach because it's softer and it blends well)-1 scoop of Greenberry Shakeology-1 tsp of PB2 powdered peanut butter-7-8 large ice cubesBlend and Enjoy!

Supa Tropical! ShakeO
-1C of almond/coconut blend
-1C of water
-1C of frozen mixed fruit (mine contained mangos, strawberries, pineapple and grapes)
-1 scoop of Greenberry Shakeology

FAVORITE! Or at least one of them! This CHAI TEA LATTE SHAKEOLOGY is a winner!
Vanilla!
Vanilla is an awesome shakeology flavor to start with! It's super versatile and really yummy! I have a ton of fun jazzing it up!

Here are some of my Vanilla absolute favorites!

**For a lot of these I make tea or some other hot drink. What I will usually do is I will heat the water and let the tea steep and then cool make down during the time that I'm working out! That way the tea is nice and strong and has cooled before I mix it into my Shakeology!**

Pumpkin Spice Latte Shakeology:
-12 oz of STRONG Pumpkin Spice tea-**Optional coffee if desired - I don't think this one needs it**-4-8 oz of almond milk-Scoop of VANILLA Shakeology
-4-8 oz of almond milk
-Scoop of VANILLA Shakeology
-Ice (as much as preferred) and blend

Chai Tea Latte Shakeology**One of my absolute favorites!!**
-12 oz of STRONG Chai Tea
-**Optional coffee if desired - I don't think this one needs it**
-4-8 oz of almond milk
-Scoop of VANILLA Shakeology
-4 ice cubes (or ice to taste)
BLEND AND ENJOY!!

Apple Pie Shakeology
-1C Apple Cider (make hot and let cool)

-1 scoop Vanilla Shakeology
-Couple shakes of Cinnamon
-4 ice cubes (or ice to taste)
BLEND AND ENJOY THE DELICIOUSNESS

Strawberry Cheesecake Shakeology
-1/2C  almond milk

-1 read 21 day fix container of greek yogurt
-1 scoop Vanilla Shakeology
- Ice if desired
BLEND AND ENJOYE!

Just a little recipe collage with some of my favorite recipes!
CHOCOLATE!
Oh chocolate chocolate chocolate....yummmmmmmmm

I'm telling you right now, I might be a little bit biased on this one. I'm a chocolate girl. I spend most of my time swapping between chocolate and vanilla because I love the versatility. But in my heart, I'll always be a chocolate lover. And these recipes are SUCH amazing treats! I legitimately feel like I'm cheating on my nutrition when I have one! They're THAT GOOD!

Peppermint Mocha Shakeology: **FAVORITE**
-1C STRONG Peppermint Tea
-1C almond milk or drip coffee (cooled) or both half and half
-1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology

BLEND & ENJOY!

Mocha Frappuccino ShakeO:
-0.75C Almond Milk (or Almond-Coconut Milk Blend)

Strawberry!
Similarly to greenberry, I found this one to be less versatile but still delicious! I don't have as many recipes with this one, but that's definitely not to say it's not yummy!

Berry Delicious ShakeO:
-1.5C of almond milk
-Handful of chopped greens
-1 scoop of Strawberry Shakeology
-a handful of frozen mixed berries - add more of these for a thicker, fruitier shake
-2-3 large ice cubes
Blend and Enjoy!

Tropical Strawberry ShakeO:
-1-2C of almond milk or WATER
-1 scoop Strawberry Shakeology
-1 frozen banana
-Ice to taste
BLEND! and Enjoy the simple yumminess!

I hope you got some fun recipes out of this! I have a blast making and thinking up NEW shakeology recipes! What's your favorite? If you've got a good one that I just HAVE to try, post below! I would love to check it out!

Have an awesome day!

For today's #TastyTuesday...I want to tell you about one of my favorite things EVER...

Shakeology!

If you know a Beachbody coach, you know that we talk about Shakeology a lot. That's probably because we're all equally obsessed with it!

What you may not know is what this product is and why we're all SO obsessed...

Well, let me break it down for you, first by describing to you the diet cycle and how it usually works.

When you first start out on a diet, you're super stoked about it right? You're gung-ho! You've got your recipe catalog down, you know your macros and your calorie intake and you're stoked about the results you're going to see and where this new you is going to take you.

Two weeks later, you may see yourself starting to struggle. You may have seen results, which you're pumped about. But enthusiasm can't quite save you from the struggles you're feeling! You're craving things. Things that you can't have on your diet. And you're craving those things badly. But you decided to stick with it....

...Until you don't. Until you give into your cravings and you feel like a failure...

Does this sound familiar? Trust me - I'm not trying to be a debby downer! I am, however, trying to be realistic.

It's a vicious cycle, but I can tell you from personal experience of it's accuracy! Even when I was on Weight Watchers my success and my dedication would wax and wane in a pattern eerily similar to this exactly timeline.

But recently I have come to better understand why this happens.

It's called nutrient deficiency.

The problem with most conventional diet plans, including popular ones like Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, and the DASH diet, is this...

Despite the fact that they may provide you with results, the drastic reduction in calories result in a insufficient nutrient intake, leaving you with cravings galore! That's why your body has cravings, and revolts against the carefully planned out diet you've been utilizing! It's the body's way of telling you that you're not giving it enough of what it needs!

In a 2010 journal article by Jayson B. Calton in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, many of these popular diet plans were analyzed. He took suggested daily menus from Atkins, Weight Watchers, South Beach, and the DASH Diet, and analyzed them not only for total calories, but also for sufficiency and deficiency in 27 essential micronutrients. And guess what he found?

All 4 diet plans left you micronutrient deficient! Meaning, that you weren't getting the sufficient quantities of all 27 essential micronutrients in that daily plan. And, BONUS, to GET 100% nutrient sufficiency on these diets, you needed to eat 18,000 CALORIES A DAY OR MORE!!

That's how difficult it is to get 100% of your daily nutrients...

I know what you're thinking now - "Okay, so nutrient deficiency is a problem. But, why should I care?"

Here's why...just some health statistics from Calton (2010):
  • America's overweight/obesity epidemic affects more than two out of three adults and 15% of children
    • More than 34% of adults are obese
    • Approximately 25% of American adults are on a diet at a given time
  • Micronutrient deficient subjects had an 80.8% increase in likelihood of being overweight or obese
So, where does Shakeology come into play?

All of us Beachbody coaches are obsessed with Shakeology, and for good reason!

It's not a protein shake. It's not a weight loss.

It contains protein, yes, and aids in weight loss. But, the biggest reason we all love Shakeology is because this is the most nutrient dense shake I have ever come across on the market!

No joke - Shakeology contains a higher percent daily value of some nutrients in one serving than some of those aforementioned diets contain in their entire day's worth of food!

Not only that, but Shakeology contains so many amazing other amazing things, including...
  • Protein and Essential Amino Acids (whey protein & plant based proteins in the Vegan formulations), which help build muscle, fill you up and reduce food cravings
  • Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Digestive Enzymes which help you body with digestion, regularity, and nutrient absorption
    • Prebiotics help support and promote the healthy, "good bacteria" that reside in your digestive tract
    • Probiotics are those strains of "good bacteria" that promote the digestion and absorption of foods.
    • Digestive enzymes promote the breakdown of food!
  • Adaptogens which help promote immune and hormonal balance, a strong immune system, increase energy, and protect from stress
  • Antioxidants, phytonutrients and other superfoods which help protect against free radicals, decrease inflammation, and help maintain the immune system
So basically, if you're comparing Shakeology to other shakes...make sure you're comparing the micronutrient and nutritional content...not just the calories, cost, carbs and protein amounts!
Speaking of cost...I'm sure some of you are thinking...

"Well, ya I'd love to try it, but it's soooo expensive..."

There's a big difference between something that's just expensive and something that's valuable! Shakeology is valuable, and it is not your basic protein or weight loss shake. It's packed with great, effective superfoods! It works and it's good for you! It's not just about calories and fat and protein...it's about everything else!
Thanks to the lovely Kacia Fitzgerald for this awesome graphic!

And in terms of cost...you may have to make some sacrifices...but let me ask you this, are you willing to do that for the sake of your health?

I could not afford Shakeology when I started with Beachbody. But, I decided the sacrifice was worth it for the sake of staying committed to myself and my health. I cinched up my budget, particularly my grocery budget, and decided to forego my abundant iTunes purchases and morning coffees. At the time, I was in what I affectionately call my hell semester in school...and I was easily spending $5+ on lattes and americanos on a daily basis.

Guess what...

Shakeology is LESS than that. And it's healthier!

If you prioritize your health and make some sacrifices, this will fit into your life and your budget!

There is an investment associated with Shakeology and any of the Beachbody challenge packs - but let me ask you this...how much is your HEALTH, your VITALITY, and your ENJOYMENT of your life worth to you?

Lastly...Shakeology has benefits to me that move beyond just health...
  1. It tastes AMAZING! - It comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, and Greenberry, as well as Vegan Chocolate & Vegan Strawberry! I have SO much fun with recipes trying to make my Shakeology fun and different every day! Keep your eyes peeled for a Shakeology recipe share post comin' atcha soon! (And check out the little preview to the right!)
  2. Just some recipe ideas for ya!
  3.  It's SO CONVENIENT! - My mornings are packed, and I frankly don't have time to SIT and eat cereal or eggs or something like that during the week! I love that Shakeology is not only REALLY easy to make, but I can throw it in my blender bottle and walk around my apartment, do my hair, get dressed...all with my handy dandy shake right in my hand! And if I'm running late, my breakfast can come with me! There is literally NO EXCUSE for me to skip out on my breakfast!
  4. I have MORE ENERGY! I know I mentioned about that adaptogens can help increase energy, but when I started drinking Shakeology, I brushed that "benefit" aside. I NEVER thought that that would be something I'd experience. I mean, I'm from Seattle. I'm a coffee drinker through-and-through. And giving up my morning latte and Americano so that I could afford Shakeology was definitely a hard thing to stomach. But what I found VERY quickly after I started drinking Shakeology was that I don't NEED as much coffee anymore. I have one cup in the morning and on an average day that's it! That's all I need to get through my day! I know...CRAZY talk for a graduate student! But it's the truth! I don't drink as much coffee anymore because I don't need it. My energy levels are more consistent.
  5. Drinking my morning Shakeology makes me feel like I'll always be on track even if I don't have a perfect day!
So that's it!

That's why I think Shakeology is different based on published analysis on micronutrient deficiency in common diet plans, and also because of my experience with Shakeology!

Not only will Shakeology will provide you in one serving the dense dose of nutrition that will help you navigate through the dieting process without feeling deprived, but if you have the same experience I did, you'll find that it's a tasty, convenient, energizing start to your day!

I LOVE this product! I'm obsessed with it! And I have been ever since I started this crazy awesome coaching journey!

If you're interested, try it! There's no risk! Cinch that budget a little tighter, cut some extravagances out of your life! And if you still don't like it, don't worry Beachbody and I will take care of you! Promise! You can find more information by clicking here!

I hope you learned something! I hope I got you excited as I am about this product! In my experience, it is as good as it sounds! And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me!

As always, keep working hard! And you will achieve everything you want!

I was so unbelievably stoked when Beachbody released this program. I've never been much of a yogi...I'm more of a high impact, plyometrics kind of girl.  But when this program came out I knew I needed to try it!

PiYo is a cross between Yoga and Pilates...like if pilates and yoga had a baby it would be PiYo! The idea is that it combines the strength and control aspects of pilates with the stretch and flexibility of yoga. The whole tagline is "No Weights, No Jumps, Just Hardcore Results!"

Low Impact, and High Intensity Results! I feel like you can't beat that when you're one of those people that can't do high impact workouts!

This 60 day program met a lot of my hopes and shocked me with how intense of a workout it was!

My results weren't super pronounced on a numbers basis...I lost 4 pounds, and only a couple inches total around my waist, hips, legs, & arms. BUT CHECK OUT THOSE ABS!!!! Haha. That was my favorite part!
My results weren't so pronounced in numbers, but I just felt so lean and strong when I finished this program and ever since finishing, I've been super proud and ready to show-off my abs!

For the first time, I really felt like I had ab definition! That was probably my favorite part of the program was how much core strength I got from all of the plank work and yoga poses.

But as I did for my 21 Day Fix Review...I will tell you what I liked, what I didn't like etc. so you can get a big picture outlook on the program!

Dislikes:
The nutrition aspect...
After doing 21 Day Fix, I had really high hopes for the nutrition component of this program. But it was a really weird version of the 21 day fix program.  Instead of breaking things into vegetables, fruits, proteins, starches, healthy fats, and oils....they were broken into like primary vegetables and secondary vegetables which was just harder for me to rationalize and understand I guess. So I mostly used common-sense and the 21 day fix nutrition during the program.

Some of the workouts are a little longer...
The think I grew to love about the last few Beachbody programs I have done is that the workouts were a consistent amount of time! Like, for 21 day fix, they were always 30 minutes. And for Focus T25, they were always 25 minutes! The PiYo workouts are a little inconsistent in their length. Sometimes it was great because they were only 20 minutes, while other times it was a little harder to fit them into my normal schedule because they were closer to 50 minutes!

LOVES:
Low impact + Modifications.
I mean, this might be obvious, but this workout is low-impact, which is amazing for those of us that have joint issues. My knees only gave me problems when I had gone and done another high impact workout. It was so great to me to know that I could still do PiYo even if my knees were giving me trouble because of the low-impact aspect of this program! Also, I loved that she accommodated those people that maybe new to working out or new to yoga-esque workouts with her permanent modifier, Michelle! I used Michelle's modifications sometimes anyways, because some of those moves you just have to work up to so I really liked that!

THESE WORKOUTS GET YOU SWEATING!!
Every single time I would pop in one of the workouts that was a little bit shorter, I always fooled myself into thinking that it wouldn't be a good workout. False. SO WRONG. All of these workouts were great and an absurdly good workout! Like Sculpt and Buns are deceptive because they're not very long time-wise, but my god do you sweat!! I would sweat as much if not more doing these workouts as I did doing a T25 workout with Shaun T. And Sweat and Drench?? Oh my god. These workouts are amazing! There were times that I was legitimately shocked that Chalene looks so fricken cute at the end of the workout!
Holy CORE STRENGTH!
I mentioned this above...but my core strength and my abs are probably the biggest difference I noticed following this program! I have muscle in my core that I didn't even know should be there after this program! And your shoulders will also get a lot of love too! I'm loving my abs and arm definition following this program!

Holy Crap I'm kinda flexible now!!
This might be a a kind of obvious one, and something you would expect out of a program that has anything to do with yoga, but I definitely feel so much more flexible! Every time I'd go to a down dog I'd notice my heels getting closer and closer to the floor! And for someone like me who claims that I'm only able to touch my toes because my legs are so short, this was HUGE for me!

Chalene - my FAVE!
I love this woman! I learned so much more about her after this program came out--that she's not only a fitness expert, but also an entrepreneur and self-help guru with multiple amazing podcasts and a personal development program called 30 day Push! She's such an amazing supporter to have on this journey--motivating and inspirational and positive! I truly enjoyed her as a trainer! Just the right amount of motivation, balanced with reassurance! And she's VERY funny! She definitely made me laugh my way through some of the workouts!

All in all! I loved this program! Though I don't think it has quite displaced 21 Day Fix as my favorite workout program, this program definitely filled a niche in my workout program library that needed to be filled--something low impact that's easy on my knees and will DEFINITELY get me sweating!

Basically if you...
-Have joint injuries that prevent you from doing most workouts
-Previously didn't like yoga because you "don't like standing still"
-Want something different that will strengthen your core and make the rest of your workouts easier

I highly suggest you try out PiYo! It's one of my new favorites!

Holidays and visiting people can be tough! Not only the travelling part, but once you get there, there are so many temptations and disruptions to your normal schedule! There's a lot of planning and participation in the meal preparation that is necessary for making it through visits and holidays unscathed.
I managed to make it through the holidays this year not only without gaining weight, but with actually losing weight! In my life, that is completely unheard of. So, I'm going to tell you what I did to help ensure myself that.

Nothing crazy. Just small changes, and conscious activities that made my recent trip home more survivable.

First things first...

Don't make excuses before your vacation starts. What do I mean by that?

PLAN AHEAD - Pre-airport workout
I didn't leave for the airport until 1:30 pm before my holiday started.  I could VERY easily have lounged around all day, lazing away my last afternoon before I flew home. But instead...I got my workout in! Not just one workout, but two! Insanity Max 30 and Dirty 30... It burned sooooo good!! haha

Next, the airport...

We all know that there are abundant temptations at the airport! You could very easily enjoy some fast food, a burger, too many drinks...etc. But, instead, you could continue your healthy trend

I believe that if you're consciously looking for healthy options for yourself, then you will find them. No matter where you are! Including the airport!  I got this delicious greek salad with grilled chicken and tons of vegetables at a SPORTS BAR.  Do you see what I mean? I found the options that had grilled meat, chose the salad that had the least amount of unhealthy add-ons, and had a vinaigrette dressing that I asked for on the side! I ate the whole thing and it held me over for the rest of my travel day! Talk about healthy eats! :-)
Greek salad at the aiport
When I finally arrived at my parents house for the holidays, one of the first things I did was ask my mom when she was going grocery shopping. Now, my parents eat pretty fricken healthy and they're very supportive of the new lifestyle I have adopted. I totally understand that sometimes it's not that easy for people, but you can make every effort to ensure that you have the healthiest possible things available to you. So, I helped my mom write the grocery list and then went shopping with her! We got tons of yummy things that fit right into my eating plan and diet, and...I threw in a little treat for them too...which I'll get to in a bit.
Mom and my trip to the grocery store the day after I got back from school!
Something else you can do...either by yourself or with a fellow active friend...is to get outside and do something active! Instead of meeting up for drinks or dinner ever single time you meet up with someone, get outside!

I was able to spend a lot of time this holiday with a good friend of mine from high school--Rachel! And she took me on one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever been on to Rattlesnake Ridge! I don't know if I can really put into words how amazing this was, other than to just show you some pictures!

At the first viewpoint
My awesome hiking buddy
Lookout from third viewpoint--Sooo beautiful!
Fit Friends are the best! Thanks again, Rachel!

Now Christmas inevitably means lots of goodies, snacking, treats, and BIG DINNERS. Now, I'm not about to tell you don't enjoy these things.  I certainly did. But one thing you can do to put yourself in a good position is to portion your dinner properly! Check this out - I snapped a pic of my Christmas Eve dinner because I was SUPER proud of myself! Not only was the dinner healthy (bravo mom and grandma), but I loaded my plate up with vegetables, and ate less of the carbs! I even went back for seconds on the salad! I call that a win!
Christmas Eve dinner meant lots of SALAD, wild rice, cornish game hens, and family to open presents with!
Now, I kind of teased you before with what extra little things you can do to really help yourself maintain healthy habits. Do you know what that is?? COOK! Cooking for your family is not only a great way to maintain your healthy lifestyle, but it also introduces them to the lifestyle and takes a little bit of the cooking pressure off of them! Sweet deal, right?!

We're a super Italian family - so my dad and I made our family favorite kashkatelles! Not the healthiest thing in the world, but AMAZING!
Family favorite - Kaskatelles from Great Grandma Noni's cookbook
I also had my parents help me pick out two recipes that they wanted to try! Basically, I let them choose from a number. But ultimately they ended up choosing some of my absolute favorites that I'm sure you recognize!

First time I cooked, we made Paleo Phad Thai, which you know I've featured before! My parents had actually never had spaghetti squash, so not only was this a great opportunity to make them one of my favorite recipes, but also to introduce them to a new food!

And I don't know everyone...I don't know if they liked it...haha
Paleo Phad Thai - my parents devoured this recipe! :-) This is just the chicken with the cabbage mixture (I use cole slaw mix)
I also made another recipe, which I'll share in the next post! :-)

The holidays, and trips home on vacation, are totally survivable from the perspective of maintaining your progress! Make small switches...and be consistent in those things! Don't get lazy and continue to be conscious and as healthy as possible on your next trip or over your next holiday and I promise you'll maintain what you've worked so hard for!

Until next time,

I have referenced before how important it is to have daily routine, which I discuss more in this blog post. But I don't think I've talked about this as much in reference to food!

So today, I want to talk about the importance of establishing a routine with your food. Not only is scheduling time to meal prep super important, which I've discussed in previous blog posts (which you can find here), but it's also important to establish some consistency in patterns in not only when you eat, but what you eat.

I've started to call this my Daily Eats...
If you talk to a bunch of people who are fit, gym rats, or bodybuilders...you'll probably find that these people eat very similar things for the most part from day-to-day! In fact, most other people tend to do the same...without even meaning to! They don't even notice that they're doing it, but they're day to day is pretty repetitive...

So, this is an example of what I eat day to day! It's very simple!

I start off my morning with a cup of coffee, pre-workout!

Then, about an hour or so later, after my shower, I have my Shakeology for breakfast.

I usually get into work around 8 am. So, I'll have my first snack of the day around 9:30-10 am. That's usually fruit. I've tried having a veggie snack in the morning. I don't like. Vegetables to me just aren't a morning food!

Then, around 11:30-12, I have lunch! Lunch is always a salad for me! Usually it's Kale, but not all the time! I have grown to REALLY love my lunch time salads. Salads are my favorite way to get my vegetables in! And this lunch salad just fits into my day so well.

Then, in the afternoon, around 2-ish, I have my afternoon snack. I love veggies and hummus!! I tend to stick with celery or cucumbers. I prefer cucumbers actually! But, recently the cucumbers haven't been very fresh so I've switched back to celery!

Then - dinner! I usually have dinner around 5pm when I get home from work! This is by far my heartiest meal of the day! And varies the most in my day-to-day eating. My dinner recipes are the things that I feature in my MOTW  and budget MOTW posts! These tend to be things like quinoa mac n' cheese, crock pot chili, etc. I REALLY like my dinner to be a single dish that encompasses all of my food groups! Those are my favorite meals, because they simplify everything for me!

Occasionally, I'll have an evening snack if I'm still hungry! I really like greek yogurt for that because it seems like I'm eating ice cream!! :-) Yummy!

So, that's it for today! Just a simple post, but if I've found anything other than meal prepping to be really effective in my healthy lifestyle journey, it's the consistency I've developed in eating habits!

Have a great week!!

I generated this list of tips and tricks for my December Challenge group, and it just seemed like too useful of a list to not share! So, here you go my friends! Try some of these out! And feel free to comment below if you've got any other good tips that have worked for you.

Don’t skip meals. In an attempt to make room (and save calories) for that Holiday party later, you might skip lunch. But you’ll probably only end up eating more because you’re starving! Some tips? Have a small snack of vegetables before you head out to the party. Or, even better, try eating 4-6 SMALLER but more frequent meals during the day.

Survey party buffets before filling your plate. That way you can be more selective of what foods you have! Have some of your favorites and maybe skip over those snacks that you are less enthusiastic about!

Bring your own healthy dish to a Holiday get together. That way you can be SURE that there is at least something healthy for you to indulge in!
Avoid hovering by the appetizer table. My friend posted this on Facebook the other day and it has stuck with me. A person was observed lingering near an appetizer table two hours before the meal began, and in that two hours over 1200 calories worth of appetizers! Before the meal! So, choose to mingle away from the appetizer table and you’ll save on calories
Chew some gum. Chewing gum actually tricks your body into thinking you’re eating. So, chew some 15 minutes before hitting up the appetizers to cut down on appetizer intake!
Plan to exercise. This might seem obvious but if you don’t PLAN WHEN you’re going to exercise, you’re probably NOT going to exercise! FAIL TO PLAN AND YOU PLAN TO FAIL!
Bring snacks everywhere. Long hours of Christmas shopping means that you WILL inevitably get hungry! So, bring some snacks with you! Apples, carrots, celery, and nuts are all great, portable options!
Treat that meal as your reward. Organize an active activity, like a Holiday Run, OR a group Beachbody workout. Then you can all reward yourself with a delicious meal, WITHOUT the guilt!
Eat slower. One of the biggest reasons why we all overeat is because we’re eating too quickly for our brain to relay the “I’m full” signal, which usually takes about 15-20 minutes. So, eat slower and stop when you’re satisfied, not stuffed!
Hydrate. Have a water bottle with you all the time, and DRINK UP BUTTERCUP! Most of the time we mistake “thirsty” signals for “hungry” signals. So quench that thirst with water, and you’ll avoid overeating too!
Stock your  freezer. Either pre-made or recipes you’ve whipped up and frozen—stocking your freezer full of healthy meals is a GREAT way to ensure healthy eating during the busy holiday season!
Organize fun activities, instead of ones that revolve around eating! Try sledding, snowboarding, skiing, hiking, OR just walking and looking at Christmas lights! Get our and get active!
BE REALISTIC! You’re probably not going to lose tons of weight over the holidays, but it definitely is realistic to maintain, and maybe even lose a couple if you’re dedicated! Focus on maintaining your healthy lifestyle!

If you're looking for an image of all of these to share, you're in luck! I generated one to share with my family and friends on facebook!

Happy Holidays everyone! I know it's a struggle, but let's try to stay HEALTHY this Holiday Season!

I wrote my first life handbook post about a year ago. It can be found here, and is called A Life Handbook - The Ultimate Tool to Personal Development. Though I have considerably changed how I keep my life handbook, the gist of this tool is still the same.

As I mention in the previous post, the thing that inspired me to start a life handbook was this website called Personal Excellence, where the creator Celestina Chua, created this idea of a tool that contains essentially everything you would need to motivate and organize your life. This thing, she called a life handbook, a description of which could be found at this link-- http://personalexcellence.co/blog/life-handbook/. The Life Handbook grew as an accessory from the PE program, 30 Days to Live a Better Life (or 30DLBL). If you have the time and the inclination, I highly recommend you partake in this program, and its sister program 30 Days to Be a Better Me (or 30DBBM).

Both of these programs can be found at the following links:
Live a Better Life in 30 Days - http://personalexcellence.co/30dlbl/
Be a Better Me in 30 Dayshttp://personalexcellence.co/30bbm/

**Note that throughout this post I make references to Personal Excellence's website and tools of Celestina's that I modified to generate my Life Handbook.  All of those reference are links! Just hover over them and click and you'll be redirected to that information on Celes' site.**

A Life Handbook contains anything and everything pertaining to not only your current life, but also the life you want to live.  Everything you've ever been inspired by, yearned for, wanted to achieve, wanted to remember, needed to say, etc., all goes into your life handbook. It literally encompasses any and every aspect of your life that you want it to.  That is the overall point of a Life Handbook.

In my previous post, I described the sections that I use and how I organize them in an electronic version of the Life Handbook. I have sense gravitated to a hard copy life handbook. As much as I wanted to move away from using paper and carrying something clunky and large around, an electronic goal setting document never had the same feel to me as a hard copy.  I like the hard copy because I personally get more out of WRITING my goals out than I do from typing them out. There's something about pen to paper that makes the goal a more personal, tangible thing to me. That is my own person experience. If you do want to explore the soft copy, electronic version, than I suggest you check you out that previous post.

But, if you're interested in seeing the hard copy version...or even just interested in seeing the sections I now include in my life handbook...read on!

First things first, format.

I use the Arc System from Staples in an 8.5" x 11" format.  I  love this system so much! It provides the same perks as a binder-- flexible and modifiable--with the sleek, flatness of a notebook.  I hesitated originally at the thought of doing a hard copy notebook, because a binder just seemed to bulky. But I didn't want to start a bound notebook, because what if I wanted to remove something, or change the order of something? No, I change my notebooks too much to have a notebook. This Arc System provided me with that nice balance! I can change things whenever I want, without compromising the look and feel of the notebook and that is something I LOVE!

You can also use a nice, leather-bound notebook, or a binder...or whatever other system you'd like! Really this is totally about you and what inspires your creativity.

My Life Handbook Title Page
Now, in terms of content.

I suggest you open your book with something that inspires you! It could be a quote, an image, a collage, whatever! For me this quote was perfect! It takes up a whole page, and it's just so inspiring for me!

Now, we get into the sections of the notebook.  For me, my sections have gotten incredibly simplified since my last post...

Before I felt the need to get all crafty and clever. Now, my sections are very simple.
-Goal Setting
-Reflections
-Beachbody
-Science
-Projects/Ideas

GOAL SETTING Section.
Basically, this section boils down to the "what motivates me" section. There's many sub-sections of it, and in that sense it is probably my most extensive section.

The first sub-section is my Mission Statement, which can be found in the middle left of the below collage. What is a mission statement you might ask? Well...it's hard to describe but essentially, it's the statement that governs and dictates anything and everything you do in your life. It can be one line. It can be many lines. But it should be so specific to you and so inspiring to you that you just want to GO DO SOMETHING when you read!
Goal Setting Cover Page (top), Mission statement (middle left),
Vision Board (bottom left), and Values (right)

My Mission statement reads:
To be fearless in all aspects of my life. To live with confidence and without regrets. To live with integrity, mindful and present in everything that I undertake, achieving my highest potential, so that I may inspire others to do the same. To improve the lives of others by my action and my influence.
For me, that statement gives me butterflies, and makes me want to kick it into high gear and really swing into action. Yours should do the same! I developed my mission statement during the 30DLBL program I mentioned before. It was so incredibly worth it for reason.

The next section is my Vision Board (bottom left). A vision board is simply a collection of images compiled together that encompass all your most pressing goals from all aspects of your life.  For me that encompasses everything from being very fit, living healthy, having complete and utter confidence, travelling and experiencing the world, music (which I someday hope to play in public), and scientific goals.

Next are my Values (right image).  I was inspired to develop my values when I was reading "Awaken the Giant Within" By: Anthony Robbins...I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make big changes in their life. These are the things I value in life, more than anything in life. The things that give me the most pleasure, or the things that I think will enhance and improve my life. Not all of these things are things that I currently exercise, but I feel that by incorporating into my life they will improve my life.

Life Evaluation worksheet (top left), Weekly goals worksheet (top middle), Action Plan worksheet (top right), 1, 5, and 10 year goal worksheets (bottom left), categorized milestones from 1, 5, and 10 year goal worksheets (bottom right).
For the next few sections I designed a number of worksheets, primarily using Google Drive's drawing tool. I really LOVE how these worksheets turned out!

The next big section I call my Life Evaluation (top left). It's something I do before I set my goals because it's very important to determine what area of your life you need the most work in before you start setting goals. You'll otherwise set a goal in an area of your life where you don't need help, and what does that help really?

This section was inspired by the Personal Excellence Life Wheel.  In this worksheet, you consider a number of areas of your life, ranging from business/career/studies, to health/fitness, to relationships, personal growth, etc. You score yourself from 1-10 in each category, and then you explain why you scored yourself in such a way on the right column.

The next section encompasses my Action Plans (top right).  I have 3 total action plans, corresponding to 3 different aspects of my life where I was weak and needed to improve. These worksheets outline Milestones I want to achieve and action steps that I want to take to achieve these milestones.  These milestones are followed by a section where I evaluate obstacles that I will face and how I plan to deal with those obstacles.

Next I have a number of goals worksheets.  These goals worksheets include long term goals, including 1, 5, and 10 year goals.  These sections are pretty self explanatory, so I won't dwell on them other to say that I evaluate all aspects of my life and describe the things that I will achieve in those time frames.

I then evaluate my goals on short term time frames--monthly, weekly, and daily.

For the monthly goals worksheet (not pictured), I evaluate my goals for the month primarily in 4 categories--school/lab, love and family, Beachbody, and Personal Growth.

For my weekly goals, I fill these out Sunday evening for the following week during my weekly review.  My worksheet contains 5 sections, not all of which are completed during this time.  These sections include:

Focus - What will be my focus this week?
Inspiration - What quote or notion is inspiring me this week?
To-Do List - What specific tasks will I accomplish this week?
Something Positive - To be completed at the end of the week describing at least something positive that occurred during the week.
Notes

section (bottom left), and example page from my daily
personal development section (bottom right)
Lastly for this goal section, is my daily goals, though this section is not so much a "goals" section in the classical sense. It is more of a section to focus my efforts for the day. Each morning while I drink my morning coffee, I complete what I call a Morning Ritual.  In this ritual I answer a series of questions. For example, What do I desire today? What direction should I take to guide me toward my goal? How am I going to be disciplined today? What am I excited about or looking forward to? Etc.

REFLECTION Section.
This section of my Life Handbook is broken into a few sections--Daily Personal Development, Reflections, Gratitude, and Inspiration/Quotes.  I'll tackle each section one at a time, but basically this section is just a bunch of lined paper where I can record the information pertaining to these different sections. But these 4 sections definitely have a specific purpose.

My Daily Personal Development section is meant to accompany the personal development I do on a daily basis.  Whether it be reading books, listening to audiobooks or podcasts, occasionally these materials call for assignments or evaluation of specific aspects of your life. Sometimes its answering questions. Sometimes it's pouring your heart out for 5 minutes. But this is the section where I do that writing.

My Reflections section is meant for exactly what it sounds like--reflection! I try to reflect at least weekly. In fact, I schedule and block out a considerable chunk of time for relaxation and reflection every Sunday evening. In this section, I reflect on how my week went. What were my successes? My failures? What did I struggle with? What went well? What would I like to improve upon for next week? All of that information is written here.

The last two sections are very self-explanatory.  Gratitudes and Inspiration/Quotes.  If there is something I'm particularly grateful about, I record it in the gratitude section. Even if it's nothing particularly special. If I'm having a bad week, or a bad day, I find it helpful to just start recording anything in my life that I'm grateful for.  If there's a quote or an interaction that I found inspiring, I record that in the inspiration section.

Beachbody section - With tabs for "Team Calls" & "Training" notes (bottom left), my weekly schedule (bottom middle), and an example notes page from a Team Call (bottom left)
The next two sections of my Life Handbook are very specific to me, but who knows! Maybe you're a Beachbody Coach too, or a Scientist, and you want to include one or both of these sections!

BEACHBODY Section.
This is the section of my Life Handbook where I organize my Beachbody training and information. The majority of this information is contained on an excel document, but there are some things I like to have written out and available to me when I don't have a computer.  For example, my daily schedule (shown bottom center).  I also have my business tracker, as well as some more specific customer information. For example, keep a printout of Customer Shakeology Ship Dates, particularly for new customers so that I can check in with them prior to their next shipment.  Additionally, I have two subsections, which are very similarly organized to the Reflections subsections.  They're both comprised of lined paper and are primarily for note-taking during Team Calls and Training.

SCIENCE Section.
This section is a work in progress, but essentially it will contain project organization, plans, and notes relating to my research projects. Additionally, some science related sections from the next section (Projects/Ideas) will likely be moved to this section when it is more fleshed out.

Projects/Ideas - My checklist for the 21 day journal article challenge my
friends and I are doing (top right), project pages for PD and Science reading
(bottom middle and right)
The last section, but certainly not the least (though probably the least extensive) is the PROJECTS/IDEAS Section. It's nothing particularly fancy. It contains Project lined paper, and contains project pages for things like Personal Development resources I want to explore, as well as Blog ideas, Science reading ideas, etc.

Eventually, I plan on expanding this book even further to include planner pages so that I can truly make this book the one and only tool I need for organizing and improving my life!

So that is the extent of my Life Handbook! I highly suggest you check out the Personal Excellence website, check out some of her 30 day self-improvement programs, and start your own Life Handbook. If you have any other questions or would like to see larger pictures of any of the worksheets I created for my Life Handbook, feel free to let me know in the comments sections!

Happy Saturday! And as always, never stop improving my friends!

Until next time,
